Italy who is well-known for their defense in football history did not show much of that and definitely missed the leadership of Fabio Cannavaro. They missed him marshaling the defense even more.
Ruud van Nistelrooy, Wesley Sneijder and Giovanni van Bronckorst all got goals to beat the Azzuri 3-0 in the first game for both teams. Group C is this
tournament's group of death and any loss could pretty much mean bye-bye for the team. There is not much to write about as Italy was no where close to living up to their world champion reputation.
Marco Materazzi got injured during the game and that further weakens the side. They need to get their act together as Romania & France played out a goal-less draw the other day and Italy looked weakest amongst the group teams as of now.
I wouldn't be surprise if Romania get through even though they started as the least favorite in this group. It will get further interesting in other groups as well with Germany, Czech Republic, Portugal, Croatia & Spain also got crucial first game wins to get their fans interested.
No real surprises other than the Italy game where the Dutch winning wasn't the surprise. It was more about how un-organized the Italian defense looked without Cannavaro.
Not much of a soccer fan, but did catch some of thr Italy game. It was embarrasing for them.
