If you have heard of UAE which you would have probably, you couldnt have done without hearing the miseries of traffic.
In the absence of a useful transport system, most people who work here travel by cars. Since Dubai is so expensive to live most people come from neighbouring Emirates like Sharjah, Ajman & Ras-al-Khaimah... add both together and the equation spells TRAFFIC JAM. Today's post is dedicated to this aspect of living in UAE which everybody pretty much gets used to and accepts as a given for living and working in the UAE.
Emirates Road is the route for most people coming from outside Dubai. Its a great idea of a freeway connecting all the Emirates. However it to has not stood the load of thousands of cars going in the same direction at the same time. The speed limit is 120km/h... officially.
One would expect the next line to read that people dont follow that limit and race through... hehehe...sorry to disappoint you. Remember that this post is about irony.
So what I really was trying to say is that if you get stuck in a a jam which I was a few days back... in front of a sign board saying maximum speed 120km/h and minimum 60km/h should they penalize me for driving slow?
That is one ironic spot to be in. Almost like someone played a joke on you...don't you agree?
Doesn't UAE has a public transport system? :S
ReplyDeleteSo, how long before that subway project comes to fruition? And can't they build alternate routes into the city? I remember being caught in a jam once around 6PM on the highway between Dubai and Sharjah. I guess it must be much worse now, kinda like karachi tbh

ReplyDeleteWell, same thing also happen in Houston. I drive my car on Interstate 10 (I-10), which has 60 mph(around 100 kmph) speed limit. But I got traffic jam in rush hours. It is common problem in US(specially big cities). But they also have some HOV lines, which never jam.

By the way, if they come to penalize you, just point to the cars ahead of you and then yell, "Issue THEM a ticket first!"

ReplyDeletewell the metro is expected by sept'09 and many people are counting on that. Luckily we have a metro station in our building...yes... in it.

ReplyDeletemake sure u nvr ever move to bombay..traffic jams are a part of our daily life...i think the avg speed here must be like 30 kmph on congested roads!
I always wonder why the people who are always thinking of building largest bridge, largest building, 1001 star moonlight and sunshine hotels never thought that all these buildings are meant to attract people who, one day, will decide to come out of the apartments / rooms and go on the road. Typical mentality of that region. I have seen how bad does it get in the peak hours commuting from outer states to Dubai.

As for metro, I guess it will be very different in those countries as using public transport and private is attributed to the status rather than convenience.
UTP... am pretty surprised at this... was always under the assumption that things are all dolly there in terms of infrastructure.
ReplyDeleteI dont think I should really complain...there are enough good things to stick around Dubai...I guess most big cities have this issue...at least Dubai government is doing something about it and there is lots of room for development etc so all is not lost...

ReplyDeleteBTW, a max. speed limit of 120kph sounds really good. I should fly there with my bike at once, to test its top-speed, perhaps at night, when the traffic's lean. :P
