Andy Murray - Is he Top 5 material?

Andy Murray looked great as a complete tennis player when he came back from 2 sets down against Gasquet in this year's Wimbledon. The emotions, the heart and the skill, everything was there as it should be. He has a great serve which can only improve. He is young and the fans can expect some big things in the future from him.

However, the match against Nadal just proved how
far away he and everybody else is from Federer & Nadal. Even Djokovic is not really right up there with the 2. The No.1 & No.2 are really much higher than that if you get Djokovic at No.3.

Andy Murray lost out to Rafael Nadal in a drubbing to say the least. Murray didn't play bad at all. It was the flawless Nadal who was just too good. The crowd brought him out of the doldrums against Gasquet but even the crowd was quietened by the forceful points by Nadal. Andy Murray has got the potential to be great but he has to pick up some pointers from Nadal. The attitude is there but whether Murray has the perseverance and consistency to keep at it and keep improving that is something that only time will tell.

If we talk about the top 5 players in the world and we exclude the greats of Federer & Nadal who are pretty much automatic. Djokovic is going to stay up there. That leaves 2 spots. If somebody asks is Andy Murray top 5 material, I would probably say yes with the recent performance at Wimbledon. But currently he is not better than a fit Roddick. Davydenko, Blake and for that matter Nalbandian are better players than him. He may have moved ahead on a bit of crowd support this year at Wimbledon but he has to prove to the world that he can win without them also.

I think he needs to build up some muscle and become a real big serve. That will help him win some big matches and save him in the crucial points which will make him go up in the rankings.

  1. He is allready top 5 material - the bookmakers have him 4th favorite for this weeks masters event and the US open. By the end of the year he will likley be in the top 5 in the rankings. If he is'nt there at the end of season, then he will likely move up after the OZ open 2009.

  8. @commonfan - I wouldn't really count him out like that...just because he is young...and still a long way to go...depends on the attitude though...so lets see...

  10. he may be just "another" tennis player now...but I think he is the first Brit in recent times who seems to have a more potential than Henman and Rusedski...

lots of improvement potential...he has the heart and attitude as well...
